Van Cootens Diervoeders have been supplying feed to several zoo's for years now.
In co-operation with "Noorder Dierenpark Emmen", specific feed for different species of zoo animals was developed.
With Cora Berndt, zoo nutritionist in Emmen, the needs of various zoo animals were charted.
The developed feed was tested extensively which resulted in a good evolved assortment.
Van Cooten Diervoeders will always be prepared to solve nutritious problems and help to develop feed for specific species of zoo animals.

Pellets without gluten for all primates
Glutenfree primate pellet is a commercial dry food without wheat, rye, oats, barley or other gluten containing cereals. In Emmen Zoo it was discovered that a glutenfree diet given to marmosets and tamarins (callitrichids) improved the health of these primates. A glutenfree pellet
can be part of a diet of other primates perfectly, even when they are not sensitive to gluten; the pellet is harmless and nutritionally compairable to other primate pellets. After introduction of the glutenfree diet to the callitrichids in 1999 in Emmen Zoo, symptoms of chronic diarrhoea,
loss of weight, hunger and intestinal problems have become rare in these animals. Some human and animals are known to be sensitive to gluten; gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, oats and rye. This might not be unexpected regarding callitrichids: they live high up in the trees
in South America where they feed on gum, fruit, insects, eggs and sometimes a little bird. They’re not used to eat cereals, and therefore might lack certain enzymes necessary for the digestion of gluten. In these animals the intestines will slowly but inevitable get severly
damaged after consuming wheat, rye, oats, barley or other gluten containing cereals. Absorption of all kind of nutrients will decrease (severely) resulting in malnutrition, loss of weight and hunger. But the first symptom noticed by keepers will be severe, stinking, chronic diarrhoea.
